Cosmere Tabletop Success: Why Fantasy Illustrators Should Watch Sanderson's IP

to Brotherwise Games' recap from Gen Con 2026, the "State of Games in the Cosmere" panel pulled back the curtain on what is shaping up to be one of the most artistically active tabletop lines in the fantasy space right now — and if you're a card game illustrator watching the market, the numbers alone should have you paying attention.

The lineup that actually sells

Let's talk commercial reality for a moment, because I know a lot of you are weighing whether fantasy IP work is worth building toward. The Cosmere RPG launched its Stormlight Campaign Setting in Fall 2025 and landed at #2 on ICv2's top-selling RPG list, holding a top-10 spot through Spring 2026. Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game has moved over 100,000 copies since November 2024. Shards of Creation released in late June, sold out before Gen Con even opened, and is already on its third printing — under two months out.

What this tells you as a working artist is straightforward: Brandon Sanderson-branded tabletop is not a passion project, it's a hot brief. When a line moves product this fast, publishers reinvest in art. They're commissioning expansions. They're hiring for new campaigns.

The illustration that caught my eye

Here's the part I actually want to sit with over coffee. Shards of Creation features art nouveau-style illustrations by Medusa Dollmaker, and Brotherwise specifically called out that the game is "the most easy-to-learn" in their catalog — paired with that specific stylistic choice. That's not an accident, and it's worth studying for your own portfolio decisions.

When a publisher targets family and first-time players, the art direction has to carry accessibility. Readable silhouettes, clear figure-ground separation, warm color logic that signals "this is approachable" — these aren't aesthetic preferences, they're functional requirements. Medusa's art nouveau influence gives the cards organic curves and decorative framing that visually reduce cognitive load while still feeling premium. If you're building a portfolio aimed at gateway games, look at how this line handles that brief. Compare it to something dense and textural and ask yourself which one a non-hobbyist would actually want to learn from.

What to watch for your own pipeline

A few things worth flagging on your radar. Mistborn: The Well of Ascension, a shuffle-in expansion for the deckbuilding game, is expected in November — that's new hero cards, new dual-metal cards, and a solo/co-op mode. New card art means new commissions. The Mistborn Campaign Setting for the Cosmere RPG ships the same month, and Wave 2 Kickstarter fulfillment begins in September, with the digital public release on September 10.

For the Stormlight side, Chasmfiend Volume 3 debuted at Gen Con and is available on DriveThruRPG, and Tidebreakers — the next campaign-length adventure — is targeted for October 2027. Long lead times on these campaigns mean the artist shortlists are likely forming now, not when the game hits retail.

If Cosmere work is on your wishlist, study the existing visual language across both lines, understand how the publishers balance consistency with each artist's individual pop, and get your portfolio in front of Brotherwise and Dragonsteel while these products are still in active production. The momentum is real, and the door is open.
